Science Illiteracy
Unable to discern fact from fantasy? Confused by basic science? Taken in by product claims with no scientific basis? This is happening to more and more of us.
Just look at the field day that mystic holistic freeloaders are having. And the openings we give to companies that sell bogus supplements and treatment. This is outrageous.
The "controversy" between evolution and creationism is illustrated by a cartoon strip: a geology teacher points to a map in which heaven is on top, earth in the middle, and hell on the bottom. The teacher says, "God lives up here - and the devil lives down here - and that's all you need to know."
The United States has set itself up to look ridiculous to the rest of the developed world. This is true mostly in the way science is taught, and more specifically, in biology and the origins of man. In comparison to other developed countries, it is a scientifically ignorant nation, growing more so all the time.
America has always been a nation of legal immigrants. Hindus, Muslims, non-believers, Jews and Christians are in our classrooms. So if we insist on a specific kind of creationism, we can teach it in a religious setting or at home. If our faith and family influence is strong, we should not be afraid of our kids hearing about science.
But American schools seldom teach kids good science. Therefore, it will soon be handicapped in a world that increasingly depends on it. But for now, America has become a laughingstock.
